Maria Skobtsova House

Type of organisation

Health and social care

The Community and Maria Skobtsova House LTD offers a high quality, unique and specialist setting for people who are difficult to place outside of hospital. Through our fifty plus years of experience, high staffing ratios, extensive activity program and proactive person-centred approach, we are able to support people in achieving their optimum level of independence and have a quality of life that would be difficult to achieve in most settings. We recognise we are a somewhat unusual service model and that we cater for particularly complex individuals. This is likely to be a factor in why our service users currently come from fourteen different localities rather than all being local to this area.

We focus on building peoples independent living skills, self-esteem, and insight into the importance of medication and professional input to a level where they are able to move on to more independent accommodation.

Our model is also unusual in that we operate our head offices close to our homes in Totnes and Plymouth where we have an activities department with qualified activities leaders who lead activity sessions and are supernumerary to the homes staffing provision, HR, general admin, finance, Health & safety and our training team etc. This means our home Managers are freed from many of the admin tasks that care home managers must often consider, so they are able to focus more on their service users, their staff team and ensuring we are delivering safe and effective support to people with complex needs and histories.

We have one of our management team on call for support and advice 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Additionally, we commission a consultant Psychiatrist on a self-employed basis who supports us to respond quickly and effectively when people are facing challenges.

We maintain a high ratio of staff to service users in our homes and our staff work an unusual set shift pattern and are full time members of our team with a set number of hours for the month. This allows staff to be able to build the therapeutic relationships that would be difficult to develop working shorter less structured shifts with no consideration given to the building of relationships, spontaneity or flexibility.

We invest in our staff through training and a commitment to a stable income etc and we believe that it is due to this stability and investment that we have very good retention rates and very experienced staff who are consistent and skilled enough to build the kind of therapeutic relationships that I believe are key to the progress and stability of placement of the people that live within our organisation.
