We are looking for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join us at Devon County Council, where we can offer a full-time opportunity which will develop your skillset as a project manager alongside enhancing your knowledge and experience of  workforce issues and system wide working.

About the role

Occupational Therapists play a key role in enabling people to overcome barriers preventing them from doing activities that are important to them, promoting independence and a sense of identity.

This is a short term externally funded post, funded by Health Education England for one year. Devon County Council and Somerset County Council are exploring improving investment in the existing workforce and scoping new ideas to enhance the workforce of the future in Adult Social Care.

This project will support the creation of systems wide sustainable workforce for both counties. We aim to create capacity to work collaboratively across the two organisations to:

Establish a structured career promotion campaign, offering shadowing opportunities across both local authorities
Support the development of a new preceptorship policy and programme to support newly qualified OTs, those new to the organisations and returners to practice
Build on existing work to progress a sustainable work experience offer in partnership with education providers
Design a programme to enhance practice educator training which will create expert educators through the development of confidence, competence, and leadership skills
Scope and explore the benefits of introducing physiotherapy roles in Adult Social Care.
Explore the potential of an integrated Occupational Therapy Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) role, enabling innovative solutions to improve outcomes across the local populations.
Identify EDI champions in teams to support inclusive practices and confidently challenge discrimination, highlight inequality and advocate for underrepresented communities.
Share the learning from these outcomes both nationally and across the Southwest, feeding into the AHP Southwest forum and Principal Occupational Therapy Network
There are national drivers for increasing numbers of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) considering the impact and need related to Covid-19. Occupational Therapists have a key role in the rehabilitation, maintenance, and promotion of independence for people impacted by the pandemic. Currently there is a national shortage Occupational Therapists nationally, so there is a need to ensure a focus on investment in the workforce to support retention whilst also capturing interest in the profession through a variety of routes.

This role will see you developing key strategies to address existing and new opportunities to promote, invest in and innovate the Occupational Therapy workforce in adult social care.

You will work collaboratively across the two Counties and across the Southwest region to strengthen the Occupational Therapy profession through collaboration and shared learning.
